How to live joyfully?

If we take a close look at a father and a mother expecting a baby, we’ll find that before the baby is born, they think of everything in their preparations; from a nice room to clothes and toys. They do this because they love the baby and want him or her to enjoy life.
In the same way, man was created having everything perfectly prepared for him to enjoy. Man is surrounded by beautiful nature; the sky, the earth, the sea, the plants, animals and birds.  He also enjoys the power of thinking and making decisions, free will and various other mental, physical and spiritual capabilities. All this should give him self-confidence, contentment, and inner peace, however, this is not always the case.
Some people think that their lack of happiness and their discontentment is related to not having enough money or material possessions.  On the other hand, many people, who have lots of money and possessions and several means of entertainment, are not happy either. Why aren’t they happy? Why can’t man be joyful?
This could be because:

  • His perception of the source of joy and happiness is inaccurate.
  • He is continually comparing himself to others.
  • He has abilities but is not making use of them.
  • He has no hope in his ability to change for the better.
  • He is self-absorbed and focuses only on what would make him better off regardless of other people.

What is joy?
True joy is a wonderful feeling that stems from the heart and is closely tied to a sense of gratitude and contentment. The source of true joy is from within and is not dependent on external circumstances.
If you have money and possessions, but are not content, you won’t be happy. Moreover, money comes with a baggage of worry and trouble which may overburden the mind and heart and may take away one’s inner peace.  On the other hand, you will find poor people who are always satisfied and happy because they are thankful for what they have, be it health, shelter, family, friends, love, etc. and not just money.
How can I live joyfully?

  • I should look at what I have rather than what I don’t have and be grateful for all the blessings in my life.
  • I should search for my talents and gifts and use them to the best of my abilities.
  • I have to have faith and hope always.
  • I should aim for success and trust that if I fail once, I will succeed the next time.
  • I should acknowledge that success is not money, or status or awards- success is doing your best every day.
  • I should have a heart full of love for other people. I should be helpful, considerate and continually work towards other people’s happiness. Their joy will ultimately give me joy.

Do you think someone can give up a comfortable wealthy life in search of true joy?
